CSKA Moscow is undoubtedly Russia’s best basketball team of all time. In fact, CSKA is the second most successful team in Europe, right behind Real Madrid, with eight EuroLeague titles. Of those EuroLeague championships, four were won in the past 16 years.

The list of basketball stars having played for CSKA is incredibly impressive. The list includes: Sasha Volkov, Andrei Kirilenko, Trajan Langdon, Darius Songaila, Aleksey Savrasenko, Ramūnas Šiškauskas, Theo Papaloukas, Nenad Krstić, J. R. Holden, Sasha Kaun, Miloš Teodosić, Victor Khryapa and Nando de Colo. It’s import to also mention Alexander Gomelsky, the legendary basketball coach, who led CSKA as a coach for nearly 20 years.

Most field goals made by zone, CSKA Moscow 2007-2021

Miloš Teodosić is definitely on the list of the best ever European basketball players. With multiple individual awards, topped by a EuroLeague title in 2016, Teodosic is a big part of CSKA’s recent history. He spent six seasons in Moscow before going to the LA Clippers and he leads four zones: three 3-pt zones and the left elbow.

Three former CSKA players own two zones each.

Vitaly Fridzon leads the corner 3 spots, with great efficiency too. The shooting guard was part of the Moscow team from 2013-2018.

2-time EuroLeague winner, 2016 EuroLeague MVP, part of the EuroLeague 2010-20 All-Decade, and with multiple other individual and team awards, guard Nando de Colo also made this chart. The frenchman spent five seasons at CSKA before moving to Fenerbahce. He leads the top of the key and the left post.

Sonny Weems leads the two midrange zones on the right, despite spending just three seasons at Moscow. Lastly, it’s Kyle Hines who leads from the paint with 827 field goals made in seven seasons.

Most field goals made by zone in a single season, CSKA Moscow 2007-2021

I’ve done these kinds of shot chart analyses for over 20 teams and it’s the first time I see this. 9 out of 11 zones in the leading scorers in a season chart are THE SAME as the leading scorers overall chart!

Milos Teodosic leads three 3-point zones thanks to his 2014 and 2015 seasons. Nando de Colo leads the top of the key and left post thanks to his 2014 and 2015 seasons as well. Sonny Weems won his two midrange zones in 2014. Vitaly Fridzon earned his corner 3-point zones in 2013 and 2014.

The new faces here are Trajan Langdon and Sasha Kaun. Langdon earned the left elbow in 2009 and Kaun earned the paint in 2014.

Interestingly enough, despite seeing the 2014-15 season show up in seven zones, CSKA finished in fourth place that year, losing to Maccabi 68-67 in the semifinals.

Most efficient shooters by zone, CSKA Moscow 2007-2021

When it comes to efficiency, shot charts tell a whole different story. The only two players we are seeing again are Nando de Colo, with 51% from the left post, and Trajan Langdon, who leads two midrange zones.

Besides de Colo, the most efficient shooters here have less than 50 shots taken from their zones, and most have less than 30 taken.

Some great players star here. Victor Khryapa and Jamont Gordon lead two other midrange zones. The paint is owned by Viacheslav Kravstov.

Alexey Shved has an incredible 71% from the left wing. Sergio Rodriguez has 70% from the right corner 3 spot. Daniel Hackett leads the left corner. David Andersen and Demetris Nichols own the other two 3-point zones.

I really hope you enjoyed the CSKA Moscow part of the EuroLeague top shooters series. Was there anything that surprised you? Let me know in the comments! Also, don’t forget to follow us on our social media accounts below.
